Title: Oneirophobia
Rating: G
Genre: Angst, romance
Warnings: None
Summary: Byakuya/Hisana - She was still alive to him at night.
A/N: Wasn't sure about the ending, but I like it anyway. Oneirophobia is the fear of dreams. Written for springkink.
Night had always frightened him.
Darkness had little to do with his fear. Not even the most starless of skies struck unease in his heart; it was the dreams which accompanied night which frightened Byakuya most. When the rest of the world slept with visions of spring skies and smiling faces, he could only see her. She is still alive to him at night. Sometimes he saw her as he remembered, a glow beneath perfect white skin, the sparkle of adoration in those infinite burnt-violet eyes.
Other times he saw her with the breath of sickness heavy on her shoulders, slaking its thirst on her skin until there was no sigil of color left. Her eyes became dull like stone beaten by too many waves. Although Hisana tried to smile for him in those dreams, Byakuya could see its slip of anguish on the corners of her mouth.
Byakuya doesn’t like to remember her that way. But he takes comfort in the fact that in his dreams, Hisana appears as she should have been in life. When morning breaks through the shoji door and he wakes up to a Hisana-less bed, the sheets no longer warmed by her small body, he takes comfort in the fact that even after sixty-five years, Hisana can still live on in his dreams. Because she is dead everywhere else.
(Because he can’t let himself remember her any other way).
